Vitex agnus-castus

When hormones go crazy

Monk's pepper (Vitex agnus-castus) is, along with lady's mantle (Alchemilla), one of the best natural supporters when it comes to hormonal problems in women (but also men). .

Monk's pepper (which is also known as chaste tree, chasteberry and Abraham's balm) has been used in medicine and rituals for thousands of years. Hypocrates is said to have already used the leaves. Monk's pepper is associated with fertility, hormones and the sex drive. In the Middle Ages, the fruits were used in food to help nuns and monks not to break their vow of chastity.

Vitex agnus-castus was originally found in the Mediterranean region and south-west Asia, the Crimea and Pakistan. Today it can be found growing in nature in Spain and Italy, among other places.

Usage

Nowadays, monk's pepper is mainly used to treat hormonal problems in women. Menstrual problems and disorders of all kinds, premenstrual syndrome, fertility problems, endometriosis, thyroid problems and also libido problems and depression are said to be alleviated by taking monk's pepper.

Men can also benefit from monk's pepper if they suffer from testosterone deficiency, impotence or a lack of or excessive libido.

Some of the ingredients in monk's pepper influence the prolactin balance in the Pituitary gland, a tiny little hormone gland in the head that influences growth, reproduction and metabolism. Prolactin is a hormone that is increasingly released during pregnancy and is responsible for the flow of milk. However, the human body also produces more prolactin when we are under stress, suffer from sleep disorders or are hypoglycaemic. Monk's pepper can be used to support these conditions.
