Peppermint is one of the most well-known regional plants that grows in many gardens. In winter it tastes great in hot tea and in summer it is wonderfully refreshing in cold water..
Mentha x Piperita belongs to the Lamiaceae family and variations of peppermint grow in many areas of the world. There are also still growing areas in Germany.
Did you know that since the middle of the 19th century there has even been a "peppermint train", that runs regularly between Straußfurth and Großheringen in Thuringia? It runs through the small town of Kölleda, which used to be a large growing area for peppermint. The railway line was used to transport the mint - hence the name "peppermint train" that is still used today.
