Mangosteen

The queen of fruits

Have you heard of mangosteen? The fruit of the mangosteen tree (Garcinia mangostana) is increasingly coming into focus, as the fruit's ingredients are said to have a high antioxidant effect.

Mangosteen originally comes from Malaysia, but is now grown in several tropical East Asian countries and Central America. It needs high humidity and prefers temperatures between 25°C and 35°C. It takes 8 to 10 years for the tree to bear its first fruit, and due to the sensitivity of the fruit, it is usually picked by hand. The largest producers include Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.

It is also known as the "queen of fruits". It is said that the British Queen Victoria was so enthusiastic about the mangosteen that she offered a reward to anyone who brought her fresh fruit from Asia. This is where the name "queen of fruits" comes from. Whether the legend is true or not, the mangosteen remains a fruit that delights with its unique combination of taste and health benefits.

Benefits of the fruit

The fruit's ingredients include antioxidants such as xanthones. These are said to slow down cell aging, support the cardiovascular system and reduce inflammation in the body. Mangostin is the main component of the xanthones. Mangostin is said to have antimicrobial properties and can potentially act against bacteria and viruses.

The mangosteen also contains vitamin C, fiber and potassium. This means that the fruit can not only help fight free radicals in the body, but also strengthen the immune system and support digestion.
