German chamomile is one of the best-known medicinal plants in Europe and can be found in the form of tea in countless kitchen cupboards.
Chamomile as such can be found on many field paths and forest edges. However, if you want to collect chamomile in nature, you should be careful not to confuse the real chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.) with the dog-fennel (Anthemis). Both look very similar, but only the real chamomile contains active ingredients that humans can use. You can easily tell them apart if you look closely at the flowers. While the real chamomile is hollow in the flower head, the dog chamomile is full. The flowers of the real chamomile are much smaller and smell typically of chamomile.
Since the active ingredients of chamomile are found in the essential oils of the flowers, it is important that the flowers are harvested in a timely manner and dried carefully.
Areas of application
Chamomile can be used both externally and internally. You can add it to bath water, where it is said to help with external inflammation.
When taken internally, it is said that chamomile can help with acute stomach problems and inflammations in the mouth and throat. The essential oils in the tea can be used as steam inhalation to help with colds, inflammations of the sinuses and bronchi.
