Eucalypts (Eucalyptus) are a genus of plants in the myrtle family (Myrtaceae). The genus comprises around 700 species, which are native to the subtropical rainforests of Australia. Nowadays, the trees can be found all over the world, whether as a food plant for koalas, for timber production or for medicinal purposes.
The essential oil 1,8-cineole, also known as eucalyptol, is extracted from the dried leaves. Eucalyptus globulus Labill. and the oil obtained from it are classified as a traditional herbal medicine. The plant is also used in tea and dietary supplements. Other ingredients include bitter substances, tannins and flavonoids.
Eucalyptus is considered a real miracle cure for many respiratory diseases, as the cineole it contains not only helps to loosen mucus, but can also have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral effects. Applied externally, it can also make a cold more bearable or have a pain-relieving effect on rheumatic diseases.
As with many medicinal plants, the same applies here: use with caution! We recommend consulting a specialist before using it on children or animals. Side effects can also occur in adults if overdosed.
