Collagen

animal-based or vegan?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human and animal body. It forms the basis of connective tissue, skin, bones, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments. Its fibrous structure provides stability, elasticity, and strength. From the age of 25, the body's own collagen production declines significantly—one reason why dietary supplements and functional foods containing collagen are increasingly in demand.

Effects in Humans

Collagen supplements are often used for skin, hair, and nails because they can support skin elasticity and moisture. Collagen is also of interest for joints and bones: Studies suggest that collagen hydrolysate can contribute to mobility and reduce joint pain.

Collagen Sources

Vegan alternatives: Since there is no plant-based collagen, collagen-promoting plant substances (e.g., vitamin C, silicon, amino acids from legumes or algae) are used for vegan products. New biotechnologically produced vegan collagens based on yeast or bacteria that mimic human collagen are emerging.

Collagen from eggshell membrane

The eggshell membrane is the thin, elastic layer between the hard eggshell and the egg white. It is rich in collagen proteins, glycosaminoglycans, and other bioactive substances. Industrially, the membrane is separated from chicken eggs mechanically or enzymatically and then dried and processed.

Eggshell membrane contains a natural combination of:

  • Collagen types I, V, and X – important for skin, bones, and cartilage
  • Elastin – provides elasticity
  • Hyaluronic acid – supports joints and skin moisture
  • Glucosamine, chondroitin, and sulfates – for cartilage and joint health
  • Amino acids – building blocks for tissue
Vegan Collagen

Is there vegane collagen? Strictly speaking, no, vegan collagen doesn't exist in nature – collagen is an animal structural protein found only in the connective tissue of humans and animals..

Human collagen protein is reproduced in the laboratory using yeast, bacteria, or genetically modified microorganisms. However, these processes are still very new and expensive.

Since there is no plant-based collagen, many products rely on collagen-promoting ingredients that stimulate the body's own collagen production:

  • Vitamin C (e.g., from acerola, rosehip) → cofactor for collagen synthesis
  • Silicon (e.g., from bamboo extract, horsetail) → important for connective tissue
  • Zinc, copper, amino acids (lysine, glycine, proline) → building blocks for collagen
  • Antioxidants (e.g., from berries, green tea) → protect collagen from degradation
