Black elderberry

The traditional medicinal plant

Black elderberry (Sambucus nigra) is a shrub native to Central Europe that grows between three and eight meters high. Meanwhile, the plant can be found throughout Europe, Asia Minor and Western Siberia. Black elderberry is also known as Elder tree, Lilac tree or Holder bush. It belongs to the muskweed family.

It is used, in addition to its use as a medicinal plant, as a flavoring in the food industry.

Ingredients

Both the elder flowers and berries are used.

The flowers are rich in flavonoids, tannins & mucilages, and essential oils.

The berries contain vitamin C and B vitamins. In addition, folic acid, polyphenols and various minerals such as potassium, calcium or phosphorus. The anthocyanins contained are responsible for the dark blue to almost black color.
