Incense

Effectiveness information

The use of incense has a long tradition. The air-dried gum resin, which is obtained from the genus Boswellia, was already used in ancient Egypt for healing purposes as well as ritual acts.

Pharmacological effects

Important components of frankincense are the so-called boswellic acids. They are considered essential for anti-inflammatory activities and have been investigated for their clinical efficacy in recent years.

However, it has not yet been conclusively clarified which boswellic acids are responsible for the anti-inflammatory efficacy. Many questions also remain open with regard to the quality and bioavailability of the raw material.

Nevertheless, many dietary supplements containing frankincense are advertised with anti-inflammatory properties. It is noticeable that in some preparations 80% boswellic acid is advertised. However, this claim often refers to the total content of the acids, which are measured by titration, and are not necessarily related to the actual effective substance.

Our conclusion

Due to its ingredients, frankincense can have health-promoting properties.
