Thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) is a versatile plant that has been used as a spice and medicinal herb for centuries. Originally native to the Mediterranean regions, thyme has now spread all over the world. Nowadays, it is not only a popular ingredient in the kitchen, but also an ingredient in many food supplements and cosmetic products. Thyme belongs to the labiate family and is characterized by its small, fragrant leaves and delicate flowers.
Thyme is often used in combination with other active ingredients. Despite its long history, studies on the effectiveness of thyme alone are limited. In 2006, thyme was named medicinal plant of the year. The plant contains various essential oils, tannins and flavonoids.
One of the most important components is the essential oil thymol, whose antibacterial effect has been proven in the laboratory. Thyme can therefore help to alleviate respiratory diseases thanks to its anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties.
Thyme is also said to have digestive properties. The vitamin C it contains and the antioxidant flavonoids can help to strengthen the immune system. Some studies suggest that thyme may also have stress-reducing properties. Many other areas of action are described in folk medicine, but are not supported by experimental or clinical data. These include its use as an emmenagogue, sedative, antiseptic, antipyretic, to regulate menstruation and cramps and to treat dermatitis.
